We know how much deaf and hard of hearing people have been affected during the pandemic. Having to stay at home for long periods of time, not being able to visit, or receive visits from, family and friends, nor to go shopping nor on outings, has been a nightmare for many. Some people with hearing loss are not able to use a conventional telephone, and others have struggled with Zoom or similar technology to keep in touch by video calls.
Our Wellbeing Helplines in Maidstone and Canterbury have received hundreds of calls from clients wanting to know if we could set up some social groups for people with hearing loss, as the country slowly returns to normal. to which we say....."Yes we can!"
Since September we have succeeded in setting up 8 new Social Groups running before Christmas! These first groups are in Ashford, Thanet, Faversham, Tonbridge, Maidstone, Medway, Dartford and Gravesend, and all have been welcomed by local people. Opening early in 2022 will be new groups in Canterbury, Sheerness, Swanley/Orpington and several more by next summer.
We also expect to have some new Walking Groups estabished in the near future!
To begin with, the groups meet monthly, in comfortable, centrally located premises that are close to public transport and parking. Refreshments are available. Information about services to people with hearing loss, guest speakers and activities are olfered, and each group will decide what it wants to do.,
We hope you will want to join your local social group!
